I’m sure many of you are familiar with the original ice cream shop that offers you a taste of any flavor ice cream you want before you make your decision on which scoop you are going to enjoy. You getting hungry now…but keep reading..

Giving you a taste (or as many tastes of different flavors as you’d like) is a brilliant way to ensure that you not only order a cone at that moment, but it’s also a way to bring you back to try more flavors on another day.

You can use this brilliant marketing strategy in building your business, too. Offering your prospects a taste of what it is that you provide is a proven and easy way to get people to become part of your community, and part of your marketing/product funnel (the funnel is the “journey” (that builds a relationship over time) that your clients follow from the first visit to your website, where they enter by giving you their contact information, down through each level as they make their way through each purchasing step in the funnel). By offering them a sample, you’re giving them an opportunity to get to know you without risking anything more than perhaps a bit of time.

In your marketing/product funnel, the taste you are giving your potential clients is at the top of the funnel, the widest part. The taste is your freebie/complimentary/gift offering and is your first (and usually only!) opportunity to engage your prospect. Your taste needs to be something of value that you offer for free to people who visit your website in exchange for their contact information, usually their name and email address.

This is often one of the most overlooked steps in building an online business. A prospect needs to see your message many times (it ranges anywhere from 5-10) before they will feel confident enough to risk handing over their money to you. In order to build a relationship with people you need to be able to contact them again, which means your goal is to capture their email address before they click away from your website.

If they leave, it’s unlikely that they will come back, so don’t lose the opportunity to welcome them into your community, your funnel. They landed at your website because they were looking for something (usually a solution to a problem they are having, right? :)). Give them a taste of the solution you offer. And remember to make it easy for them: make your sign-up form or email so obvious that they’d have to trip over it not to notice it (yes, that includes pop-ups and the like, because even if they annoy you as much as they do me, they work!).

So, what can you offer of value in exchange for their email address? A newsletter, an ecourse, an audio clip, or a special report, are all good options.

Personally, check what you like to offer.You give them a taste of what your services are like with something wild, and then you keep in touch with them on a regular basis with another hot stuff. This all allows you to build a bond with your readers in a uniquely personal way, letting them get to know, like and trust you over time, with you having to build that bond one-on-one.

So, one caution is to not offer any one-on-one interaction with you at this level. You want to leverage your time, and offering free consultations or one-time meetings with you is not a good use of your time. Let them get to know you over the course of your freebie offering. When and if they become serious about you and your products or services, they will move further down the funnel (from free to fee) without you having to “sell” them on what you provide during a complimentary session (how nice is that?).

So what is your taste going to be? Here are some other ideas:

  • write a Top Ten article about the benefits of your products and services, convert it to a PDF file, and offer it as a special report/product/service guide.
  • record a short audio/video about the three key things your niche needs to know about X.
  • or create a quick-start guide that helps your market focus on how to get started.

Once you’ve given them a taste, they will likely come back for more, eventually turning from a prospect to a client. Creating a taste of what you provide is easy and it’s fun. Try it and watch what happens!

You still need an about page, a contact us page, and a homepage but for informational purposes, don’t add much more. You don’t need multiple pages of company history or a page that has the logos of everybody you’ve worked for. The less pages the better.

E-Commerce Sites

Now that you have the basics for all sites, let’s look specifically at e-commerce sites. E-commerce is all about selling but that doesn’t mean that it’s a total hard sell the whole time.

A Blog-

You may or may not need this depending on your offerings. If you’re a specialty e-commerce site, a blog can make a lot of sense. Mr. Porter is a UK based specialty menswear e-commerce site well known for their blog. Articles like, “What to wear to the Gym this January” and, “A Dopamine-Releasing Recipe From an Expert Chef” are examples of how the company creates an immersive experience that speaks to a lifestyle instead of just selling.

User Generated Content-

Social media has changed how we shop. We care what the company tells us but we put more weight on the opinions of customers just like us. Have a place for people to post reviews of the products/Goods/Services you sell to the world.

It’s All About The Price-

Don’t be shy about the putting the price where people can see it right away. You want qualified buyers and they don’t want to waste their time. Stay away from things like, “click here to see the price.”

Easy Purchasing Experience-

The more the customer must click, the more likely you’ll lose the sale. As you think through content on your site, how can you get them from learning about the product to entering their credit card information the fastest?

 Lead Generation Sites

Lead generation sites aren’t as much interested in directly selling the customer a product or service—although they might be later on. For now, they want to build a list of qualified people or want to generate traffic for ad clicks or other monetization strategies that don’t include direct selling. Often these are blog sites. Here are a few items a blog site should have.

A Sign Up Form-

Actually, nearly every site should have a sign up form but for lead generation sites, getting somebody onto your e-mail list is the ultimate win. Popups still work but people are growing increasingly annoyed by them and Google is reportedly now penalizing what it calls “intrusive interstitials.” Google doesn’t want popups that cover main page content where the user has to click off of it to continue on the site. You still need a sign up form but how can you do it without annoying your reader?

An RSS Feed-

Yes, RSS is getting a little old but it’s still widely used in mobile apps and computers. For people who read a lot of blogs, an RSS feed is how they know you posted a new article.

Video Content-

You can still get a lot of mileage out of text posts but content is quickly moving more toward video. Your phone provides a great a way to get into video blogging and services like Facebook Live allow for great content without a lot of work.

Expert Posts- You’ve likely noticed that everybody seems to have a blog now and many have blogs about content they’re not experts in. Find experts in the field and interview them. Make blog posts highly authoritative and valuable.

Intentional Call to Action- If your goal is to get them signed up on your e-mail list, have a sign up call to action at the end of every post. You might even embed a sign up form into the post. Don’t let them read your content without asking them to sign up unless you have an intentional reason.

Bottom Line

Don’t forget about the basics but depending on the type of site, there are other items you should also have. Like anything with content marketing, test, retest, and test again. Be willing to give up what you believe are good ideas if the data tell a different story.

  1. Google Analytics — If you don’t track the results of your marketing, you might as well not be marketing at all. Google Analytics gives you a great overview of your site’s statistics plus some very nitty-gritty details that help you track internet marketing campaigns.
  2. XML Sitemap Generator — If you want good search engine rankings, Google likes it if you have an XML sitemap on your site. You don’t have to worry about what XML is, just use this generator and it will create the XML file for your site (up to 500 pages per site).
  3. BrowserShots — Are you aware that your site looks completely different on some browsers? Use this browser compatibility tool to see how your site looks in Firefox, Safari, Opera, Chrome, and Internet Explorer. For some real comparisons, check older versions with newer ones (like IE6 versus IE8). Why check older versions? Because 20 percent of people have IE6 loaded on their computer, even though it was created in 2001 and is not fully CSS compliant. Better safe than sorry.
  4. Google Keyword Tool — Want to know which keywords are popular and what people are searching for via Google’s search engine? This tool allows you to do some great market research.
  5. Alexa.com — Alexa allows you to see the traffic rank for your site and your competitor’s sites. When you enter the Alexa site, click on the Site Info link at the top.
  6. Compete.com – Compete also allows you to see ranking information about your site and your competition. Use Alexa and Compete together to get a fuller picture.
  7. SurveyMonkey — If you’ve been looking for an easy way to do market research, SurveyMonkey is the tool for you. It allows you to do online surveys, and I also use it for course evaluations and brainstorming in my mastermind groups.
  8. Search Engine Spider Simulator — Want to know how the search engines really see your site? Are they picking up all your keywords? Use a search engine spider simulator and see for yourself if your site is search engine friendly or not.
  9. WordPress — You can host your blog for free on WordPress.com or use their free software on your own domain via WordPress.org (note the different domain names…WordPress has two of them).
  10. SpamCheck — There’s nothing worse than sending an email that gets caught in filters and never reaches the recipients. This tool will show you which parts of your email text will trigger a filter.
